Purpose: The General Studies program is intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university. For students who are uncertain about their educational goals, this curriculum offers sufficient flexibility so that students may take courses that are accepted at most public four-year institutions in a wide variety of baccalaureate degree programs. It also provides greater opportunity than that offered in other college-transfer programs for the student to take courses that emphasize areas of academic strength and interest. Students are urged to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major department in planning their programs.
Admission Requirements: All students will be required to demonstrate college readiness through transcript review or informed self-placement. Based on this review students may request or be required to enroll in prerequisite or corequisite math and/or English courses.

General Studies Curriculum Degree Requirements:
Student Development (1cr)
Humanities (6cr)
Two courses - Choose one from each category below
Social Sciences (6cr)
- Choose any two Social Science courses (6cr) from ECO2, GEO, HIS, PLS, PSY3, SOC
Lab Sciences (8cr)
- Any two lab science courses or any two-semester sequence in BIO, CHM, ENV, GOL, or PHY
ITE 115 and/or Transfer Elective(s) (15cr)
- Any course which has been approved as a transfer elective4
Total Minimum Credits: 60
(Note: BIO 141 and BIO 142 do not meet the Lab Science requirement)
Students graduating from this program must demonstrate proficiency in specific computer competencies necessary for academic success, transfer, and employment. Individual programs may specify how computer competency is attained as part of the program. If not specified otherwise, computer competency is demonstrated by passing ITE 115 (transfer elective) or an equivalent competency test. Students are encouraged not to wait until the final semester to complete this requirement.
1Students should check with institutions to which they are considering transferring to determine appropriate MTH courses and/or sequences.
2ECO 120 and ECO 201 -ECO 202 contain similar course content. Students who take ECO 120 cannot receive credit for either ECO 201 or ECO 202 . Students who take either ECO 201 or ECO 202 cannot receive credit for ECO 120 .
3Students cannot receive credit for both PSY 235 and PSY 230 .
4Transfer elective credits must be selected from the Approved Transfer Electives List. See a counselor, a faculty advisor, or http://www.germanna.edu/transfer-services/transfer-electives/.
Students graduating from this program may be called upon to participate in a general education outcomes assessment during their last semester.
