Early Childhood Development, AAS - 636

Purpose: The curriculum is designed for persons who seek employment involving the care and education of young children, or for those persons presently employed in these situations who wish to update and enhance their competencies. Occupational opportunities include program leaders, supervisors, and/or directors in child development programs.

Admission Requirements: All students will be required to demonstrate college readiness through transcript review or informed self-placement.  Based on this review students may request or be required to enroll in prerequisite or corequisite math and/or English courses. Students must complete a Division of Professional and Technical Studies approved background check.

Students are required to participate in observation and practicum experiences in approved or licensed early childhood/primary settings. A Criminal Record Clearance/Sex Offender Registry check is required for placement. Students should see the program head for a list of convictions that will prevent employment. Students will be expected to complete a tuberculosis test before placement as well.

1 Students considering transfer should check with anticipated four-year institution to determine appropriate MTH courses and/or sequences.

Scholarship Opportunities:


For eligible students, the Virginia Child Care Provider Scholarship Program https://www.dss.virginia.gov/, Project Pathfinder Grant https://www.vecf.org/project-pathfinders/ and other scholarship opportunities, as well as financial aid, can provide assistance with the funds necessary to complete the Career Studies Certificate in Early Childhood Development.
