General education is the component of the collegiate experience that cultivates the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values characteristic of educated individuals. It extends beyond disciplinary boundaries and emphasizes the connections among various bodies of knowledge.
Germanna degree graduates will demonstrate competency in the following general education areas: Civic Engagement, Critical Thinking, Professional Readiness, Quantitative Literacy, Scientific Literacy, and Written Communication. See VCCS Policy 5.2.0.1, the six competencies.
In accordance with the general education guidelines of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), Germanna has established the following list of general education transfer electives.
Important Transfer Note
Some courses listed may not transfer to every four-year college or university. Before selecting electives, students should:
- Consult transfer guides for prospective colleges and universities.
- Contact prospective institutions directly to confirm how specific courses will transfer into a chosen major or program.
- Meet with a counselor or academic advisor to ensure elective choices satisfy both Germanna degree requirements and the requirements of the intended transfer institution.
Passport Courses
Germanna offers a set of VCCS Passport Courses, which are commonly taken during the first semester of many degree programs. These courses are guaranteed to transfer to most Virginia public colleges and universities. Exceptions may apply for certain specialized baccalaureate programs.
